BCR Quartz Reference Particles
Quartz Reference Particles from The Institute for Reference Materials and Measurement (IRMM) are non-spherical, certified materials used for evaluating particle size analysis instruments or sieves requiring samples with a wide size distribution. They are also useful for evaluating laser diffraction spectrometers and electrical resistance analyzers. The reference particles were prepared, characterized and certified under the sponsorship of the Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) the standards bureau of the European Common Market. They were analyzed by laboratories in Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom. This material has been certified by BCR, the former reference materials program of the European Commission. The product certificates have been revised under the responsibility if IRMM.

Mined in Frechen, Germany, the quartz is mostly silicon dioxide with trace amounts of
iron (Fe) ,titanium (Ti), sodium (Na) and calcium (Ca)
The chemical composition was characterized using hydrofluoric acid dissolution, then the residue was analyzed.
Sodium and calcium content were determined by flame photometry.
Iron and titanium content were determined using spectrophotometric techniques. BCR 66, 67, 69 and 70 were calibrated by gravimetric sedimentation and BCR 68 and 130 by a sieving technique by the BCR.
The samples were also analyzed by TEM, electrical
sensing zone, sieving and several sedimentation methods. A continuum of the weight distribution is provided for each sample. The density was determined by pyknometer andis approximately 2.6 g/cm3
